Overview

Overview

Backbone State Park is Iowa’s oldest state park and one of its most dramatic landscapes, centered around the narrow, rocky ridge known as the Backbone. Located in northeastern Iowa near Strawberry Point, the park offers a rugged terrain that stands out sharply from the surrounding farmland, making it one of the state’s most distinctive outdoor destinations.

Landscape & Geology

Landscape

The park is defined by steep limestone bluffs, exposed bedrock, deep valleys, and dense hardwood forest. The Backbone ridge rises sharply above the surrounding land, creating cliffs, overlooks, and rock formations rarely seen elsewhere in Iowa. Backbone Lake lies at the heart of the park, adding open water and scenic contrast to the rocky terrain.

Trails & Scenic Views

Trails

Backbone State Park features an extensive network of hiking trails that range from easy lakeside walks to challenging climbs over rocky ground and steep slopes. Trails lead to scenic overlooks, through forested valleys, and across exposed limestone ridges, offering some of the most varied and rewarding hiking experiences in the state.

Recreation

Recreation

Recreational opportunities include hiking, rock scrambling, boating, fishing, and swimming at Backbone Lake. The park also offers rock climbing areas, picnic shelters, and winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow. Campgrounds with electric and non-electric sites provide options for overnight stays.

History

History

Established in 1919, Backbone State Park was Iowa’s first state park and played a key role in the development of the state park system. Many of the park’s stone structures and facilities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, leaving a lasting architectural legacy that blends naturally with the rugged surroundings.
