Overview

Falls of the Ohio State Park preserves one of the most significant exposed fossil beds in North America along the banks of the Ohio River. Located in Clarksville, just across from Louisville, Kentucky, the park offers a rare opportunity to walk across ancient Devonian-era limestone formations that were once part of a shallow tropical sea. Combining geology, river scenery, and regional history, the park delivers an experience unlike any other in Indiana.

Landscape & Geology

Landscape

Landscape

The defining feature of the park is its wide expanse of fossil-rich limestone exposed when river levels drop. These rock layers, more than 350 million years old, contain preserved coral, brachiopods, and other marine life from prehistoric seas. The Ohio River flows beside the fossil beds, creating a dynamic landscape that changes with seasonal water levels. Wooded areas and open riverbanks add additional natural contrast to the rocky terrain.

Trails & Scenic Views

Trails

Trails

Paved and natural surface trails wind through the park, offering views of the river and access to the fossil beds. The Interpretive Trail connects visitors to key geological and historical points of interest, while riverside paths provide opportunities for quiet walks and photography. Much of the terrain is relatively flat, making it accessible for a wide range of visitors.

Recreation

Recreation

Exploring the fossil beds is the park’s primary attraction, especially during periods of low water. Birdwatching is popular along the river corridor, and wildlife viewing opportunities vary throughout the seasons. The park’s interpretive center features exhibits on geology, natural history, and early exploration, adding educational depth to outdoor exploration. Fishing is permitted in designated areas along the river.

History

History

The Falls of the Ohio played an important role in early American exploration and settlement, serving as a natural barrier to river travel. The area became a gathering point for early settlers and traders navigating the Ohio River. Today, the park preserves both its geological significance and its historical importance as part of the region’s development along one of America’s major waterways.
